Lochwinnoch Whirligig by Greg Grant

This sculptural installation for Cycle Arts Festival 2021 consisted of an oversized ‘whirligig’- a simple child’s toy that has a propeller or wheel that catches the wind which then powers simple mechanical paddles. A wind powered sculpture; it responds to the beautiful natural environment of Lochwinnoch that has inspired a rich vein of Scots language poetry and is a treasured local place of leisure. The spinning paddles featured Scots words describing movement & weather.

The sculpture was painted it in bright, joyful colours adding an amusing and striking intervention into the unique context of this natural and social landscape.

Placed in shallow waters in Lochwinnoch outside the Castle Semple Visitors centre the sculpture remained in place over the summer months from June to September 2021. Initially plans were to showcase it for two weeks but Castle Semple visitors centre liked it so much they wanted to keep it for longer. However, the Sculpture was removed in early October when weather conditions deteriorated.
